A guide to Christmas in Strasbourg, France (The capital of Christmas)

Notes from a Traveller

A scene straight out of the typical Christmas movie. A whole city shining in the lights of the Christmas decoration. Christmas trees at every corner. Strasbourg, the picturesque capital of the Alsace region in northeastern France, is often referred to as the “Capital of Christmas” (Capitale de Noël), and for good reason. This charming city, steeped in both French and German influences, transforms into a winter wonderland during the holiday season. From its dazzling Christmas markets to the scent of spiced mulled wine in the air, Strasbourg is an absolute must-visit for any Christmas enthusiast. Or rather everyone who wants to feel the magic of Christmas and get hopelessly lost in the romantic atmosphere.

One of Strasbourg’s most famous attractions during the holiday season are the many Christmas markets spread around the city. The most famous one can be found on the central square, Place de la Cathédrale. It sprawls around the historic building and forms the heart of the city during the Christmas time.

Wander through the hundreds of wooden chalets selling traditional Alsatian products, handcrafted ornaments, gingerbread and holiday delicacies. You’ll find the perfect Christmas gifts, decorations and perhaps a cozy scarf to keep you warm. Be sure to stop for a hot cup of vin chaud (mulled wine).

The centerpiece of Strasbourg’s Christmas festivities is Place Kléber, where the city’s main Christmas tree is erected. This majestic tree, often over 30 meters high, is lavishly decorated with lights, ornaments, and traditional Alsatian motifs. Surrounding the tree, you’ll find the Village de l’Avent (Advent Village), where local associations and charities set up stalls to sell Christmas goods with all proceeds going to good causes.

One of the most magical moments you can experience during Christmas in Strasbourg is the time, when the tree starts blinking and the lights are turned while beautiful Christmas songs are being played. The show mostly takes place in the evening.

No trip to Strasbourg is complete without a visit to La Petite France, the city’s most charming and photogenic neighborhood. The half-timbered houses, canals and cobblestone streets make it feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. In December, the entire district is covered in festive lights, and the Christmas decorations give it a magical ambiance.

Take a leisurely walk along the canals and let yourself fall in love with all the lights and pretty details on almost every corner. Another option is to hop on a boat tour to enjoy the twinkling lights from the water. The shops and restaurants here are also perfect spots to enjoy some local Alsatian cuisine, such as choucroute garnie(sauerkraut with sausages) or tarte flambée (Alsatian-style pizza). You can also buy mulled wine to go and enjoy the taste while strolling around.

One of the main attractions of Strasbourg during Christmas time is the decoration of Le Gruber. The restaurant is known for their creative display of teddy bears and Christmas lights. You can find the street near the Cathedrale. Even if you do not enjoy a meal here, just walking by is an attraction itself. Especially in the dark, the building lights up the whole area and is a must-see spot in the city.

Enjoy the local cuisine

Strasbourg’s Christmas season is a feast for the senses. And that certainly includes the taste buds as well. Alsatian cuisine is a unique blend of French and German flavors, and there’s no better time to savor these hearty dishes than during the winter season. In addition to mulled wine and Bredle, you should try Foie Gras, which is a buttery spread. Also popular is Kougelhopf, a sweet or savory yeast-based cake, traditionally shaped like a crown and enjoyed during the holidays. And what cannot be missing is a tarte flambée. You can get all these treats in one of the many restaurants or directly on the Christmas Market of your choice.

One of the best things to do in Strasbourg is shopping. You can do that directly on the Christmas Markets, where you will find handmade treasures and beautiful souvenirs for yourself or your loved ones at home. If you have some spare time left, you can stroll through the streets of the city and visit the many shops.

Check market dates: Strasbourg’s Christmas markets usually run from late November to December 24, but the festive lights and some activities continue through early January.

Dress warmly: Winters in Strasbourg can be chilly, especially in the evenings. Bring warm clothing, scarves, gloves, and comfortable shoes for walking the markets.

Book accommodations early: Strasbourg’s Christmas season attracts visitors from all over the world, so hotels and guesthouses fill up quickly. Make sure to book your stay well in advance.
